The Best Game Design Schools in 60 Seconds

  • University of California-Irvine ranks first at 94.1. Completion and net price carry 40 points each and size carries 20, all from federal figures. University of California-Santa Cruz is second at 89.5 and California State University-Chico third at 88.9. 23 of the top 25 are public. Top 25 ›
  • Private colleges cost roughly $57,000 more. The median net price is $16,300 a year at public colleges and $30,400 at private ones, after grants, which is roughly $57,000 over four years. An out-of-state public school can cost as much as a private one, and large-endowment privates sometimes undercut a public. Public Vs. Private ›
  • The median program graduates about 11 students a year. Nearly half of the 89 colleges, 41, graduate fewer than 10 students a year. The biggest, such as Rochester Institute of Technology at about 158 a year, offer more specialist courses, while small programs usually give you closer faculty contact. Program Size ›
  • A cheap program you don't finish costs most. The highest completion rates reach 93% at University of Southern California, then 91% at Northeastern University and 88% at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The median across all 89 colleges is 59%, so about 41% of students do not earn an award there. Completion Rates ›
  • Three kinds of program share this ranking. 63 schools are here for a game design program, 10 for game programming and 16 for simulation. University of California-Irvine's top-ranked program is a simulation program, so read the course list and not the degree title. Kinds of Program ›

Heads up 23 of the top 25 are public universities, so several famous private schools sit lower than you might expect.

Methodology

How We Score These Programs

Each program gets a score out of 100 from three things you can compare at every school: how many students finish, what they pay after grants, and how many graduates the program turns out each year. Every school reports these figures to the U.S. Department of Education the same way.

Reputation and peer surveys don't count, because no one measures them the same way for every school. Each card also shows earnings ten years after starting college, for context. Earnings move so closely with completion that counting both would count the same thing twice.

Scores are absolute, not graded on a curve. The national median score is 59.5.

Who's included

Bachelor's programs in game design, game programming or simulation, open to new students

A program makes this list when it is a bachelor's in game design or interactive media, game programming or simulation and virtual environments at a college in the 50 states or DC, has had graduates in the last three years, and the school publishes its completion rate and net price. It must also be open to new students: closed and phasing-out programs are left off. A college with more than one such program appears once, with its higher-scoring program. A program missing one of these figures is left off rather than estimated.

What This Ranking Rewards, and What It Doesn't

Weighting cost that heavily has a clear effect. 23 of the top 25 are public universities, and the first private college on the list, Wilmington University, is there because its net price is $14,267. 25 of the 89 colleges have a net price of $32,000 or more, which earns no cost points at all.

That's why some names you've heard sit lower than you'd expect. The University of Southern California has the highest completion rate here, 93%, and ranks T-46 because its net price is $41,496. Rochester Institute of Technology graduates more students from its game program than any school in the ranking, about 158 a year, and ranks 58. DigiPen Institute of Technology, a school built around game development, ranks 74. None of that says those programs are weak. It says they're expensive for the typical aided student.

If cost matters less to you, read the completion and graduates-a-year figures on each card below rather than the score alone. Ordered by either one, the list would change a lot, and that's the point of showing every number.

Public vs. Private Game Design Colleges

The median net price at the public colleges in this ranking is $16,300 a year. At the private colleges it's $30,400. Those are net prices, after grants, for first-year students who got aid, so the gap is already smaller than the sticker-price gap. It's still roughly $57,000 over four years.

Two things narrow it for some students. Private colleges with large endowments sometimes give enough aid to undercut a public school, and the only way to know is to run each school's net price calculator with your family's numbers. And public schools charge out-of-state students far more than the in-state net price shown here, so a public university in another state can cost as much as a private one.

How Net Price Turns Into Points

Net price earns cost points on a sliding scale: all 40 at or below $14,400 a year, none at $43,600 or more, and evenly fewer in between. The table groups the 89 game design colleges by price and shows how many land in each bracket, how many of those are public, and the median completion rate inside the bracket. Read the completion column before you assume a higher price buys a better chance of finishing.

$32,000 or more0–15.925071%
Net price brackets and the cost points a college in each earns, out of 40, on the sliding scale. Counts are the colleges in this ranking.

The bottom row is the one to notice. A college in it earns no cost points, so it can only reach the top of this list on completion and size. That's a strong penalty, and it's deliberate, because the college that costs you the most is the one most likely to leave you with the heaviest loans. Of the 89 colleges, 27 are public and 62 are private, and 2 of the top 25 are private.

What the Sticker Price Hides

Net price is an average for students who received aid. The sticker price for in-state undergraduates at the public colleges here has a median of $8,500, and the out-of-state median is $23,200. Four years at the public median net price adds up to about $65,100. Four years at the private median adds up to about $121,800. Your own number will differ, so use these as a starting point and not a quote.

The ranges overlap more than the medians suggest. 4 private colleges in this ranking have a net price below the public median, and 0 public colleges have one above the private median. That's why public or private shouldn't be your first filter for game design schools. Look at each card's net price and the actual college.

Add what the degree needs beyond tuition. A game design bachelor's usually means a capable computer, and some programs expect you to own software or hardware that others supply. Ask each program what it provides. If you'd rather cut cost by studying from home, the online game design degrees ranking compares programs that can be completed at a distance.

Size

Big Game Design Programs and Small Ones

The median program in this ranking graduates about 11 students a year. The biggest are far larger: Rochester Institute of Technology (about 158 a year), University of Utah (about 151 a year), University of California-Santa Cruz (about 139 a year), DigiPen Institute of Technology (about 92 a year).

Size earns up to 20 points, with full marks at 50 graduates a year, because a big program can staff more electives, run more team projects in parallel and send more alumni into studios. A small program can still be the right one. You'll get more faculty time, and a capstone team of six can teach you as much as a team of sixty. Just ask a small program where its last few graduating classes went.

How the Size Points Work

The size score runs on a log scale, so the first graduates count for the most. A program that graduates a handful of students a year earns real points, and the gain flattens as the program grows. 7 of the 89 colleges reach full marks, and 41 graduate fewer than 10 a year. Across all of them, the programs here graduate about 1863 students a year, and the four largest account for about 29% of that.

Graduates a yearCollegesSize points at the bottom of the bandMedian completionMedian net price
0 to under 1041059%$28,200
10 to under 25281258%$21,300
25 to under 50131758%$28,600
50 or more72071%$15,600
Colleges by graduates a year, with the size points a program at the bottom of each band earns, out of 20.

The public programs here have a median of about 22 graduates a year and the private ones about 9. The graduate counts are the program's own, averaged over 2022 to 2024, so one unusual class can move a small program's number.

What Size Means for You

A large game design program tends to offer more specialist courses and more teams to join. The cost is that you may compete for studio space, advisors and the best capstone slots. A small program usually offers closer faculty contact and fewer course choices. Neither is better, and the right question is what you'll actually use.

  • Ask a large program how many students share one capstone team and how teams are formed.
  • Ask a small program how often each upper-level course runs, because a course offered every other year can slip past you.
  • Ask both for the names of recent graduates and where they work now.
Completion

The Colleges Where the Most Students Finish

Completion is the factor people overlook. A cheap program you don't finish is the most expensive one there is. The five highest completion rates in this ranking belong to University of Southern California (93%), Northeastern University (91%), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (88%), University of California-Irvine (86%), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (86%). The median across all 89 colleges is 59%.

The completion rate is the whole school's, not the game program's. The federal government doesn't publish completion rates by major. A school-wide rate still tells you something real about advising, aid and support, which game design students use as much as anyone.

What the Completion Rate Counts

The figure comes from IPEDS Outcome Measures. It's the share of an entering class that earned an award from the same school within eight years. A student who transfers and finishes somewhere else isn't counted as finishing at the first school. That means the median of 59% leaves about 41% of students who didn't earn an award there, and some of them did finish elsewhere. Still, it's the best common measure for comparing colleges, and it covers part-time and transfer-in students as well as the traditional first-year class.

The spread is wide. The lowest rate in the ranking is 26% at Academy of Art University, and the highest is 93% at University of Southern California, a gap of 67 points. The median completion rate among the top 25 is 59%, compared with 59% across the whole list. The public colleges have a median of 59% and the private colleges 59%.

Cheap and Likely to Finish

Completion and cost don't always move together, so it's worth looking for the colleges that do well on both. 17 colleges in this ranking have a net price under $16,000, and 6 of them also finish at least the median share of students. Across the full list, 47 colleges are at or above the median rate, and 14 of those are public. Read the completion figure on each card first, then the net price. Those are the programs where the numbers work for you on both counts.

A low completion rate doesn't mean a program is bad. It can reflect a school with many part-time students, a large transfer population or heavy first-year attrition from the whole university. Ask the program for its own retention numbers, and ask what happens to a student who falls behind in a sequence of design courses.

Kinds of program

Game Design, Game Programming or Simulation

Game degrees come in three kinds. 63 schools in this ranking are here for a game design program, 10 for a game programming program and 16 for a simulation and virtual environments program. Each program card names its kind in the line under the school.

The kind isn't always in the program's name. University of California-Irvine's top-ranked program is a simulation program, and several schools known for game programming teach it under that label too. If you know you want the programming side, the best game development degrees ranking covers just the programming and simulation programs. If you're drawn to art and animation, the best animation schools ranking covers that field.

What Each Kind of Program Usually Teaches

A game design bachelor's usually centers on design projects. Expect courses in game mechanics and systems, prototyping, level design, user testing, and a sequence of team projects that ends in a capstone. Most also teach enough scripting to build a working prototype, though how much varies a great deal.

A game programming bachelor's looks more like computer science with a game focus. Expect data structures, graphics, physics, engine work and a heavier math load. A simulation program covers virtual environments, interactive systems and real-time graphics, and it often serves training and visualization jobs as well as games.

Read the course list, not the degree title. Two programs with the same name can split their time between art, design and code very differently. Our game design vs. game development guide explains how the two paths differ in daily work.

Location

Where the Top Game Design Colleges Are

The top 25 are spread across 17 states, and no state has more than 3 of them. If you want to stay close to home, game design schools by state lists every program in your state, ranked the same way.

Where the Colleges Cluster

Across all 89 colleges, 35 of the 51 jurisdictions have at least one, so 16 have none. 14 states have exactly one. The three states with the most programs hold 27% of the colleges between them. If you live in a state with few options, check the neighboring states before you assume the nearest school is the only one.

Ohio522$27,900
Pennsylvania502$22,100
Florida400$32,500
Massachusetts411$31,200
The states with the most ranked colleges. Net price is the median across that state's colleges.

Does Location Matter for Game Design?

For the degree itself, less than you'd think. Game design is project work, and you can build a portfolio anywhere. Location matters in three practical ways. In-state public tuition is far lower than out-of-state tuition, as the sticker prices above show. Internships are easier to take when a studio is close to campus. And some programs sit in cities with a local game community, which gives you events, meetups and part-time work.

If you can't move, 13 of the colleges here report some online delivery for the program, and the online game design degrees ranking covers that route. Be sure to check whether the online option is the full program or only some courses.

Choosing

How to Turn This Game Design Ranking Into a Shortlist

A ranking narrows 89 game design colleges to a list you can read about in an evening. It can't tell you which program fits you, so use these steps to get from the list to three or four schools worth applying to.

  1. Read the cards by the factor you care about most. If you'll get big aid from a private school, look at completion first. If cost is the constraint, look at net price first.
  2. Run the net price calculator at every school still on your list. The figure here is an average. Yours could be much higher or lower.
  3. Ask for student games. A program that ends with a team shipping a playable game is teaching the job.
  4. Check the engine and the language. Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot all show up in job listings. A program that teaches one of them saves you learning it alone.
  5. Look at where the faculty shipped games and how recently.
  6. Start your portfolio now. The game design portfolio guide covers what admissions offices and studios look for.

A Worked Filter

Say you want a public college, a net price under $20,000 and a completion rate at or above the median of 59%. Applying those three conditions to the ranking leaves 10 of the 89 colleges. That's a list you can research in a weekend. Change any of the three conditions and the count changes, which is the reason to set your own conditions and check each card against the factors that matter to your family.

What to Ask Each Program

  • How many students start the game design sequence, and how many finish it?
  • What does the final project look like, and can you see recent ones?
  • Which courses are required, and which are electives that run only some years?
  • Where have the last few graduating classes worked, and how did they find those jobs?
  • What do students use to build games, and does the school provide it or do you buy it?
  • Are internships supported with credit, advising or employer contacts?

The answers will tell you more than the program's brochure. A program that answers specifically and shows you the work is usually one that knows its students. Our methodology page explains exactly how every figure above was built, so you can check this ranking against your own priorities.

After graduation

What Game Design School Graduates Earn

BLS doesn't count game designers as an occupation of their own. Video game designers are counted with web and digital interface designers, whose national median was $104,000 in May 2025, with the lowest-paid 10% under $53,750. Game developers are counted as software developers, with a median of $135,980. Those are whole-occupation figures, not studio salaries. The video game designer salary page breaks them down by state, and the video game designer career guide covers the job itself.

The Spread Behind the Median

A median hides the range. In the designer category the middle half of workers earn between $73,290 and $158,820, and the top 10% earn over $201,550. About 113,330 people hold these jobs nationally. The software developer group is larger at about 1,687,890 jobs, and its median is $32,000 higher than the designer median. Game testers are counted separately, with a national median of $104,300. The gap between those jobs is the main reason the course you choose matters, because a design degree and a programming degree open different doors.

The highest state median for designers is $136,110 in California. The three states with the most designer jobs, California, New York, Washington, hold about 49% of them. Pay and job counts both vary by state, so check the salary pages for the state you plan to work in.

Outlook and What a School Can and Can't Predict

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of web and digital interface designers to grow 6% over 2025-35, against 3.5% for all jobs, with about 8,300 openings a year. For software developers the projection is 10.2%, with about 95,300 openings a year. Those are the broad occupations that count game jobs, and not game studios alone.

A school-wide earnings figure exists too, from the College Scorecard, and it's easy to misread. It's the median earnings ten years after entry for students at the whole school, across every major. The median of that figure across the 88 colleges here that report it is $54,657, and for the top 25 it's $55,486. It tells you about the school's students overall and nothing specific about game design graduates, so we show it on the program cards for context and leave it out of the score. For the jobs themselves, read the career guides, where each role is matched to the BLS occupation that counts it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Best Game Design Schools?

By this site's score, the best game design schools for 2027 are University of California-Irvine, University of California-Santa Cruz and California State University-Chico. The score weighs how many students finish (40 points), what aided students pay (40) and how many graduates the program has each year (20). All 89 colleges are scored on federal IPEDS figures and not on reputation, so the order favors affordable schools where students finish. See the top 25.

Why Are Most of the Top Game Design Colleges Public?

Most of the top game design colleges are public because cost is 40 of the 100 points. The median net price at the public schools in this ranking is $16,300 a year against $30,400 at private ones, and 23 of the top 25 are public as a result. Net price is what aided first-year students pay after grants, so the real gap is smaller than the sticker prices suggest. A private school can still rank well with a low net price or a high completion rate. Compare public and private colleges.

Why Isn't USC Ranked Higher?

The University of Southern California ranks T-46 even though it has the highest completion rate in this ranking, 93%, because its average net price is $41,496 a year, which earns no cost points. That says the program is expensive for the typical aided student and nothing about its quality. If cost matters less to you, see where the most students finish, which names the colleges with the highest completion rates.

How Many Colleges Offer a Game Design Bachelor's Degree?

89 colleges in the 50 states and DC offer a bachelor's in game design, game programming or simulation, and all 89 are ranked here. 63 of them are here for a game design program, 10 for game programming and 16 for simulation. 27 are public and 62 are private. A college with more than one such program is counted once, on its higher-scoring one. See how the three kinds of program differ.

Is a Game Design School Better Than a Computer Science Degree for Making Games?

A game design bachelor's is better for design work and a computer science degree is better for programming. Design programs give you four years of team projects and a portfolio, while computer science is the stronger path into engine and gameplay code. BLS reports a median of $135,980 for software developers and $104,000 for web and digital interface designers (May 2025), and both counts include far more than game studios. The game development degrees ranking covers the programs in between.

Do Game Design Schools Require a Portfolio to Apply?

Some game design schools require a portfolio and many don't. Art schools and selective programs often ask for one, while most public universities admit you to the university first and the program second. Check each program's admission page for its rule. Build a portfolio anyway, because internships and first jobs in design are won on shipped projects more than on grades. The shortlist steps on this page help you decide which admission pages to read first, starting with the colleges whose price and completion fit you. See how to build a shortlist.

Are Game Design Degrees Worth It?

A game design degree can pay off, but the pay depends on which job you land. BLS reports a median of $104,000 for web and digital interface designers and $135,980 for software developers (May 2025), the broad occupations that count game jobs. Four years at the public median net price is about $65,100, so weigh the loans against the job you want. Game testers are counted separately, with Software QA Analysts and Testers at a national median of $104,300. See what graduates earn.
