3D Artist Salary for 2027

The 3D artist salary BLS publishes is a median of $102,030 a year, from its May 2025 wage survey of special effects artists and animators, the occupation 3D artists are counted in. BLS doesn't track game-industry pay separately, so this is the figure for the whole occupation, and most of its workers are in film, TV and advertising rather than games.

The top 10% earn 3.0 times what the bottom 10% earn. That's a wide range for one occupation, and in 3D art it maps onto the studio ladder: junior prop and environment artists near the bottom, senior and lead artists near the top. The mean wage was $112,870, $10,840 above the median, which tells you a group of high earners pulls the average up. Plan around the median, not the mean.

O*NET lists "3D Artist" among the sample job titles for special effects artists and animators, so this is the same federal occupation, and the same pay data, as the animator salary page. The rest of this page reads that data from the side of the people who build the models rather than the people who make them move. BLS counts about 19,970 people in the occupation on payrolls. Freelancers and the self-employed aren't in the wage survey.

Specialties

Character, Environment and Prop Artist Pay

BLS has no separate figure for a character artist, an environment artist, a prop artist or a hard-surface artist. All of them sit in the $102,030 occupation. What the federal data can't show, the structure of a game art team can explain: the specialty is part of the job title, and seniority is what the percentiles track.

  • Prop and environment artists build the objects and spaces of a game world. BLS doesn't separate their pay, so read a junior offer in these roles against the lower percentiles, not the median.
  • Character artists build the people and creatures a player looks at up close. The federal data doesn't separate their pay, so judge a character artist offer against the same range.
  • Hard-surface artists build weapons, vehicles and machinery. Precision work like this transfers to product visualization and industrial design, which gives you options outside games.

Two other things move a 3D artist's pay. The first is who employs you. A role at a studio that ships its own games, a role at an outsourcing studio that builds assets for several clients, and a film or advertising job are all in the same federal number. The second is technical depth. A 3D artist who understands shaders, optimization and the engine pipeline is moving toward technical art, a role that overlaps with programming. The 3D artist career guide covers each specialty and how studios hire for it.

Starting out

3D Artist Starting Salary

BLS doesn't publish pay by experience, so a starting salary has to be estimated from the percentiles. The 10th percentile was $58,600 and the 25th was $75,490. A first salaried job as a junior 3D artist is most likely to fall somewhere in that band. This is a reading of the spread, not a federal finding, and it covers film and advertising jobs as well as games.

The 10th percentile is $7,620 above the $50,980 median for all jobs. Contract pay isn't in the wage survey, which counts only employees on a payroll. If you're quoting a contract rate, compare it with the hourly 25th percentile of $36 and remember that you pay for your own software, hardware and benefits out of it.

The gap from the 25th percentile to the median is $26,540. That's a reading of the spread, not a federal figure for a promotion. As general advice, the way up in 3D art is owning bigger assets: a whole area instead of its props, or a hero character instead of background ones.

By state

Top-Paying States for 3D Artists

Washington has the highest published median for the occupation, $133,480, then California at $130,540 and Nevada at $97,350. The Seattle metro area holds about 91% of Washington's jobs in the occupation, so the state figure mostly describes that one metro. The gap between the highest and lowest published state medians is $85,950.

BLS publishes a median for only 31 of the 50 states and DC. In the rest the occupation is too small for a reliable figure, which is itself useful to know: if your state isn't in the data, there are very few salaried 3D art jobs there. None of these medians is adjusted for living costs.

By metro

Top-Paying Metro Areas for 3D Artists

The San Jose metro area has the highest median, $156,950, followed by San Francisco at $136,770 and Seattle at $134,120. BLS publishes a median for 41 metro areas in this occupation.

Special effects artists and animators: the 10 metropolitan areas with the highest median annual wage, BLS OEWS May 2025, among the 41 metros where BLS publishes a median. Figures tagged May 2024 are from that earlier BLS release, because BLS didn't publish one for that metro in the current release.

These medians aren't adjusted for living costs. As general advice, check local rents before you treat a higher median as a raise. Check the employed column too. A metro can post a high median from a few hundred jobs, which means few openings at any one time.

Where the 3D Artist Jobs Are

Pay and job count are different lists. California employs 7,410 of the country's 19,970 special effects artists and animators, about 37% of them, and the three states with the most jobs, California, New York and Florida, hold about 52%. Of the five best-paying states, Washington, California and New Yorkare also in the top five for jobs.

For a job search, the jobs list matters more than the pay list. A metro with many openings gives you more chances at a first job, more studios to move between later, and more working artists to learn from. The best-paying metro is worth targeting once you have shipped work to show. If you're aiming for remote work, as general advice, expect shipped credits to help.

Comparison

At $102,030, the 3D artist's occupation sits $1,970 below the $104,000 median for web and digital interface designers, the occupation game designers are counted in, and $11,670 above the $90,360 median for producers and directors. It is $46,540 above the $55,490 median for fine artists and illustrators, where concept artists are counted. Among these neighbors, the highest median is for software developers, where game programmers are counted, at $135,980. Animators and technical artists share the 3D artist's figure.

Getting paid more

How 3D Artists Earn More

The data points to three levers, and each has a cost.

Location. Washington's median is $31,450 above the national figure, and the San Jose metro's is $54,920 above it. Neither figure is adjusted for living costs, so as general advice, price the rent before you count the raise. A move to a metro on the jobs list, rather than the pay list, may do more for your career in its first years.

Moving up the range. The 75th percentile was $139,130 and the 90th $177,110. BLS doesn't tie them to job titles or years of experience, so they show what the top of the occupation earns, not what a given title pays.

Technical skills. Software developers had a median of $135,980, $33,950 above the 3D artist's occupation. Nobody moves from modeling to programming pay overnight, but a 3D artist who learns scripting, shaders and tools work is moving toward the technical artist role, which sits between the two. That's a reading of the two occupations, not a federal figure for technical artists.

Outlook

Job Outlook for 3D Artists

BLS projects employment of special effects artists and animators to shrink 0.3% between 2025 and 2035, from 51,900 to 51,800 jobs, while all occupations grow 3.5%. It still expects about 4,200 openings a year, 8.1% of current jobs, as people retire or move to other work. Those openings are the jobs new 3D artists compete for.

The projections count more jobs than the 19,970 payroll jobs in the wage survey, partly because they include self-employed artists, who aren't in the wage survey. The projection covers film, TV and games together and doesn't say which part of the occupation will grow or shrink.

What that means for a student: keep the cost of your degree low, because the first job search can take a while, and leave school with a portfolio of finished, game-ready models. The best animation schools ranking compares programs on cost and completion, and the 3D artist career guide covers what a portfolio needs.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does a 3D Artist Make?

The national median wage for 3D artists' occupation was $102,030 in BLS May 2025. BLS counts 3D artists with special effects artists and animators, and the middle half of that occupation earned $75,490 to $139,130. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $58,600 and the top 10% over $177,110. Those figures cover film, TV and advertising as well as games, so a studio offer can land anywhere in that range. See the full pay range.

What Is the Starting Salary for a 3D Artist?

A first salaried 3D artist job is best read against the low end of the range, roughly $58,600 to $75,490 a year. BLS doesn't publish pay by experience, so this is an estimate from the 10th and 25th percentiles for special effects artists and animators in May 2025, not a federal starting salary. The 10th percentile is $7,620 above the $50,980 median for all jobs. Contract pay isn't in the survey, which counts only employees on a payroll. See the starting pay estimate.

Where Do 3D Artists Get Paid the Most?

Washington has the highest state median for 3D artists' occupation, $133,480, followed by California at $130,540. Among metro areas, San Jose leads at $156,950. California has by far the most jobs, about 37% of the national total. None of these figures is adjusted for living costs, so check what rent costs where an offer is before comparing it. See the top-paying states.

Do Character Artists Make More Than Environment Artists?

BLS doesn't say, because it counts character, environment, prop and hard-surface artists in one occupation with a median of $102,030. What moves pay inside that occupation is seniority, specialty depth and the employer, and the spread is wide: the top 10% earned 3.0 times what the bottom 10% did in May 2025. The federal data can't tell you which specialty pays more, so ask a studio what range it pays for the specific role. See what moves a 3D artist's pay.

Is 3D Art a Good Career?

It pays well for the people who get the jobs, but the occupation isn't growing. BLS 2025-35 projections show special effects artist and animator jobs set to shrink 0.3% from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% for all jobs, with about 4,200 openings a year from people retiring or changing careers. Those openings are the realistic way in. The 3D artist career guide covers the work, the portfolio and how studios hire.

Do 3D Artists Make as Much as Animators?

In the federal data, yes, because 3D artists and animators are the same occupation. O*NET lists both titles for special effects artists and animators, so the $102,030 median from BLS May 2025 applies to each, along with most technical artists. The data can't tell you whether a studio pays its modelers or its animators more. Compare a specific offer against the state and metro tables instead. See the animator salary page.
