Methodology
How We Score These Programs
Each program gets a score out of 100 from three things you can compare at every school: how many students finish, what they pay after grants, and how many graduates the program turns out each year. Every school reports these figures to the U.S. Department of Education the same way.
Reputation and peer surveys don't count, because no one measures them the same way for every school. Each card also shows earnings ten years after starting college, for context. Earnings move so closely with completion that counting both would count the same thing twice.
Scores are absolute, not graded on a curve. The national median score is 59.5.
Bachelor's programs in game design, game programming or simulation you can finish fully online, open to new students
A program makes this list when it is a bachelor's in game design or interactive media, game programming or simulation and virtual environments at a college in the 50 states or DC, has had graduates in the last three years, and the school publishes its completion rate and net price. It must also be open to new students: closed and phasing-out programs are left off. The school must say you can complete the whole degree online. A program missing one of these figures is left off rather than estimated.

What to Weigh for Online Study
Two cautions apply more here than on campus. The completion rate is the school's, and at schools that enroll many adult and part-time students it reflects them, which is part of why it's the right measure. And the net price is calculated for first-year, full-time students who got grant aid, so if you're studying part-time while working, your cost per year will be lower and your total may not be.
The median completion rate across these programs is 48%, and the median net price is $21,511. 3 of the 13 schools have completion rates under 40%, which is worth asking about before you enroll.

New Castle, DE · Private nonprofit · Game programming program
72.2
Delivery is flexible here: the same game design degree is offered in a traditional classroom or fully online, at the New Castle and Brandywine locations or from home. Terms come as 15-week semesters or 7-week blocks, and new classes start every 8 weeks, so a student can join without waiting for a single fall intake. Day, evening and weekend sections exist for those fitting study around work.
Tuition is charged per credit, so a student pays only for the courses the degree needs. A typical three-credit course costs $1,317, and published tuition is $12,570. Transferring credits shortens the road to the 120 total credits. Electives can also count toward a Dual-Credit Certificate or toward master's-level coursework. School-wide, net price is $14,267 for aided first-years.
The online route here is a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, 120 credits, with a Game Development and Simulation concentration among four. It is an information technology degree rather than an art degree, and the university notes that IT is a discipline distinct from computer science and computer engineering.
Students finish with a senior project presented at the annual IT Expo before faculty, staff, employers and peers. Co-op and entry-level placements have included Worldpay from FIS, General Electric and Kroger. This is a very large school, with 45,026 students, and online learners should note that published tuition is $11,685 in state and $27,019 out of state, a premium of $15,334. Aided first-years pay $21,511 net school-wide, and 72% of entering students complete in eight years.
Saint Charles, MO · Private nonprofit · Game design program
70.5
This version of the degree is 100% online, runs four years and takes 120 credit hours at $525 per credit. Coursework starts with Introduction to Game Design and Adobe Photoshop, then moves to History of Games and Critical Theory and Level Design. Students practice working on a game project team, so collaboration happens at a distance instead of in a studio.
Lindenwood also offers the same degree in a blended on-campus format for students who would rather attend in person. School-wide, the net price for aided first-years is $18,698, 58% of students finish within eight years, and total enrollment across the university is 6,826.
The learning goals named for the online degree include analytical thinking, a collaborative approach and project management across the development life cycle. Students who finish the four years should have worked on usability, production, game art, programming, scripting and game economics.

The Game Design BFA at Academy of Art University is available online and on campus, with the same core either way. It opens with Digital Drawing for Entertainment, Playing Games in Game Development (a survey of tabletop and electronic genres in which students record and reflect on their play), Introduction to Maya and 2D Tools for Game Development, then moves to 3D modeling, animation and lighting in production environments.
Online study at this private for-profit school costs the same published tuition of $29,736 as the campus version. School-wide net price for aided first-years is $36,591 and the cost of attendance before aid is $67,777. Only about 1 student a year graduates from this program, so the online cohort is small. Across the academy, 5,498 students are enrolled and 26% complete a degree within eight years, with earnings ten years after enrollment averaging $39,008 across all majors.
The lectures and readings move online easily. The hard part is the part that matters most: making games with other people. A good online program runs team projects the way a distributed studio does, with shared source control, task boards, scheduled stand-ups and playtests over video. Ask each program how it forms teams, whether it accounts for time zones, and whether the final team project is a game you can publish.
You'll also need a computer that can run a commercial game engine and 3D tools well. Ask whether the program supplies software licenses, what hardware it recommends, and whether there's any required on-campus residency. A program that needs two weeks on campus every summer isn't fully online, even if most of it is.
The trade-off runs both ways. You lose the hallway: the classmate who playtests your level at midnight, the visiting developer you meet after a talk. You gain the ability to keep a job, stay where you live, and often pay less. If you're already working, maybe in QA or in software, that trade can be worth a lot.
Live Classes or Your Own Schedule
Online programs differ in when you have to show up. Asynchronous classes let you watch, build and submit on your own schedule within a deadline. Synchronous classes meet at a set hour, which helps if you need the push and hurts if your shifts change. University of Advancing Technology describes its delivery this way: "Delivered in an asynchronous learning environment to accommodate busy schedules, classes are structured in 7.5-week modules that you take two at a time, totaling in four classes per semester". 4 of the 20 fully online programs describe their classes as asynchronous. 5 of the 20 also offer the degree on campus, as when Academy of Art University writes "This program is available online and on campus". Ask any school with both formats whether every course in the online version matches the campus one.
Team Projects Online
An online game development degree is only as good as its team projects, because a studio hires people who can ship with others. Look for programs that put you on a team early, that grade your contribution through the commit history and the build as well as the final demo, and that mix disciplines, so programmers work with artists and designers. If a program lets you complete every course alone, you can still graduate with a strong solo portfolio, but you'll have less to say when an interviewer asks how you handled a disagreement over scope.
Hardware, Software and Time
Plan for a desktop or a gaming-grade laptop, a second monitor if you can afford one, a graphics tablet if you're in an art track, and a reliable connection for video calls and large asset downloads. Most engines and art packages have free or student licenses, but check what the program provides before you buy anything. Budget your time as well as your money. A bachelor's is still about four years of full-time work, and an online schedule that fits around a job usually means a longer calendar, not less work.
What an Online Game Design Bachelor's Costs
The median net price across these programs is $21,511, from $14,267 at Wilmington University to $36,846 at Champlain College. 6 of the 13 programs sit below that median, and 1 are public schools while 12 are private. Those are school-wide net prices for first-time, full-time students who got grant aid, so ask each school for a quote based on your own transfer credits and aid before you compare.
Animation
Online Animation Programs
These animation bachelor's programs can also be completed fully online. They're scored the same way and appear in the best animation schools ranking too.
The 7 animation programs are kept apart from the 13 game programs because they train a different skill. A game design degree online teaches systems, levels and prototypes. An animation degree teaches motion, character work and visual effects, and your portfolio is a reel instead of a playable build. The score is the same, so the scores in the list are comparable, but the jobs behind them aren't the same jobs. The median score for these animation programs is 55.5, against 56.4 for the game programs.
What an Online Animation Student Needs
Animation is heavier on art tools than most game tracks. Expect to need a drawing tablet or a pen display, a computer that can render 3D scenes in a reasonable time, and a place to leave a project rendering overnight. Ask the program how instructors give feedback on motion, since a written comment on a walk cycle is a poor substitute for a recorded critique where they scrub through your frames.
Pay and Openings for Animators
BLS counts animators with special effects artists, and the national median there was $102,030 in May 2025, and the 10th and 90th percentiles at $58,600 and $177,110. BLS projects -0.3% change in that occupation over 2025-35, against 3.5% for all occupations, with about 4,200 openings a year, many of them replacing people who leave. That's a field with few openings, so the reel matters more than the degree. The animator salary page breaks the pay down by state.
Who it fits
How to Choose an Online Game Design Program
An online program fits best if you already have some structure in your life: a job, a family, a reason you can't move. It fits worst if you've never made a game and need someone to push you through the first one, because no one will notice if you stop showing up.
If you're changing careers, an online bachelor's isn't the only route. A game design certificate is shorter and cheaper, and it can be enough if you already have a degree in another field. If you're starting from high school, compare these programs against the campus options in the best game design schools ranking before you decide.
It Tends to Work Well If You
Are working in QA, IT or software and want a degree to move up, since your day job gives you something to talk about in class.
Can't relocate. The 13 programs here are spread across 10 schools in 9 states, and an online student isn't tied to any of them.
Already finish things on your own. The completion rate here is a median of 48%, and online study rewards a steady routine.
Want a lower price. 6 of the 13 programs have a net price below the median of $21,511.
It Tends to Work Less Well If You
Learn best from people in the room. Online study costs you the hallway, and you'll have to rebuild it with a chat server and a regular playtest group.
Need hands-on equipment you don't own, such as motion capture or a full production lab.
Some programs marketed as online still require campus visits, a summer residency or a studio week. Before you apply, ask the admissions office in writing whether every course is offered online, whether any visit to campus is required, and which terms you can start in.
Check the School Before You Check the Price
The mix is 1 public and 12 private programs in this group, and 3 of the 13 schools have completion rates under 40%. Look at the completion rate first. A cheap program that few students finish is not a bargain. If you already hold a bachelor's, look at the game design master's programs instead, since a second bachelor's is often the slower route. A strong portfolio counts for more than the program you picked.
After graduation
What Online Game Design Graduates Can Earn
Employers don't publish separate pay for online graduates, and BLS doesn't count by industry. The occupations are the same: web and digital interface designers, the group BLS counts video game designers in, had a national median of $104,000 in May 2025. Software developers had $135,980, and software QA analysts and testers had $104,300. Testing is a common first job for career changers, and the game tester career guide covers how people get in.

How Far Apart Game Design Pay Runs
The middle of the pay range is a fair guide to a career, and the ends are not a promise. A video game designer at the 90th percentile earns about 3.7 times what one at the 10th earns, and that gap usually reflects experience, location and employer. A new graduate should expect to start below the median. Software developers earned 2.7 times the all-occupations median, which is one reason programming tracks draw so many people who start in game design. The salary pages and career guides go through each job in turn.
What a Degree Costs Against What It Pays
One year at the median net price of $21,511 is about 21% of a year of median pay for a video game designer. That doesn't count living costs, which you largely control by staying where you are. It does mean the online route makes the most sense when the school's completion rate is high, since a degree you don't finish still has to be paid for.
Employers Hire the Portfolio
No wage figure here separates online from campus graduates, because BLS doesn't publish one. What a hiring manager sees is a playable build, a reel, a commit history and a team credit. Pick the program that gets you shipping games, and treat the degree as the credential that gets your résumé past a filter.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Get a Game Design Degree Online?
Yes, you can get a game design degree online. 20 game design and animation bachelor's programs can be completed entirely online, and 13 of them are game design, game programming or simulation programs, ranked on this page. Some programs sold as online still ask for campus visits or a residency, so confirm the format with admissions before you apply. See how to choose one.
What Is the Best Online Game Design Degree?
By this site's score, the best online game design degrees for 2027 are at Wilmington University, University of Cincinnati-Main Campus and Lindenwood University. The score is the same one used on every bachelor's ranking here, covering completion, net price and size, applied to the 13 game programs you can finish fully online. Completion is school-wide, so check the program's own online cohort size before you decide. See the ranked list.
How Much Does an Online Game Design Degree Cost?
The median net price across the 13 ranked online programs is $21,511 a year, and prices run from $14,267 at Wilmington University to $36,846 at Champlain College. 1 of the programs are public and 12 are private. Net price is what aided first-year students pay after grants, school-wide, so it does not include the cost of a capable computer and software. Compare each school's price and not the format. See every confirmed program.
Are Online Game Design Degrees Respected by Studios?
Studios hire on your portfolio and the games you have shipped and not on whether your classes were online. What matters is that the school is accredited and that the program makes you finish team projects you can show. An online degree with no shipped work is weaker than a portfolio-heavy one on campus, and the reverse is also true. Ask any program how many of its graduates have playable projects on a public page. See what studying online is like.
How Long Does an Online Game Design Degree Take?
An online bachelor's in game design takes about four years full time, the same as on campus. Some online programs run shorter terms year-round, and transfer credit can cut the time, while part-time study stretches it. Check each program's page for its term length and transfer policy before you apply. If you already hold credits, ask for a written transfer evaluation first, because that decides your real timeline. See who an online degree fits.
How Do I Know an Online Game Design School Is Legitimate?
Check that the school is accredited by an agency the U.S. Department of Education recognizes. Every school on this page takes part in federal student aid, and each card links the program's own page so you can read the details yourself. A low completion rate is also a warning, and 3 of the 13 programs here have a school-wide rate under 40%. The median is 48%. Compare completion rates.
Do Online Game Design Students Work in Teams?
In good programs, yes, and you should ask how. Team projects online run on shared repositories, scheduled meetings and video calls, and asynchronous programs add a time-zone question. 4 of the 20 fully online programs describe their classes as asynchronous. Ask how teams are formed and whether time zones are taken into account. A program that cannot describe its team projects probably does not run them. See how online study works.
