Methodology

How We Score These Programs

Each program gets a score out of 100 from what the school charges graduate students and how many people finish the program each year, two figures every school reports the same way.

Completion rates and net prices are published only for undergraduates, so they can't be compared for master's programs. The program cards cover what a number can't: the curriculum, how the degree is structured and the portfolio each program expects.

Who's included

Master's programs in game design, simulation or game programming, open to new students

A program makes this list when it is a master's in game design or interactive media, simulation and virtual environments or game programming at a college in the 50 states or DC, has had graduates in the last three years, and the school publishes its graduate tuition. It must also be open to new students: closed and phasing-out programs are left off. A college with more than one such program appears once, with its higher-scoring program. A program missing one of these figures is left off rather than estimated.

Reading the Score Alongside the Program Cards

The score weighs what you'd pay in tuition and how many classmates you'd have. The program cards cover the rest: what each program teaches, how the degree is built and the portfolio you'd leave with. A small, expensive program can still be the right one for you, so use the score to see value and size, then read the cards for fit.

What a Game Design Master's Degree Costs in 2027

Average graduate tuition at the ranked schools runs from $8,550 a year at Lindenwood University to $66,640 at University of Southern California, with a median of $32,224. Over a two-year program, the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive is about $116,000 in tuition alone. A master's in game design is a real purchase, so it helps to see the whole bill before you compare programs.

What Two Years of Tuition Adds Up To

ProgramTuition a yearTwo years
Cheapest: Lindenwood University$8,550$17,100
Median of the 11 ranked$32,224$64,448
Most expensive: University of Southern California$66,640$133,280
Average graduate tuition, in-state rate, from IPEDS. Before fees, housing and living costs.

Our cost score is a sliding scale. 2 of the 11 ranked programs charge $9,400 or less a year and earn all 60 cost points; 2 charge $60,000 or more and earn none, and the rest earn a share in between. Those programs can still be worth it, but they have to win on something this ranking doesn't measure, like faculty, location or the team you'd work with.

Residency and the Out-of-State Rate

One public school here charge out-of-state students more than the in-state figure shown. The largest gap is $15,102 a year, which is $30,204 over two years. Check residency rules before you count on the lower number, because many states won't count you as a resident just for enrolling.

Funding Changes the Real Price

Some graduate programs offer teaching or research assistantships that cover part of tuition. Ask every program what share of its students are funded and what the assistantships pay. A funded master's at a pricey school can cost less than an unfunded one at a cheap school. The median two years of tuition here, $64,448, equals about 62% of one year of the national median wage for web and digital interface designers, the occupation that counts video game designers. That's a rough yardstick for how much debt is reasonable, not a promise about what you'll earn.

The program

What Game Design Master's Programs Look Like

Most game design master's programs run two years full time. The first year is usually studio courses and rapid prototyping: small games built in a few weeks each, on teams that change from project to project, so you practice the whole cycle many times. The second year narrows to one larger project, either a thesis game you lead or a team production that runs the full year.

MFA, MS and Professional Degrees

The degree name tells you something about the balance. An MFA is a studio arts degree, built around critique and a body of creative work, and an MFA game design program usually asks you to defend a thesis game. An MS or a professional master's leans technical, with more programming, engine and production coursework. Read each program's course list for the real mix, because two programs with the same degree title can be very different. The 6 notable programs below alone use 5 different degree labels: MFA, M.I.T., MET, MEAE, MS. The label tells you less than the syllabus does.

Thesis Game or Capstone

A thesis game is yours. You make the creative decisions, so it shows your taste to an employer or a hiring committee. A capstone is a team production, which shows you can ship with other people. Both are fine for a portfolio, but you should know which one a program runs before you apply. If you're weighing a game design master's against a programming-heavy path, the game development degrees ranking covers the technical side from the bachelor's level up.

Public or private

Public and Private Graduate Tuition Compared

The public universities in this ranking charge a median of $10,698 a year in graduate tuition for in-state students, and the private ones a median of $37,195. 2 of the 11 ranked programs are at public schools. That gap is why the master's ranking leans toward public universities, the same way the bachelor's rankings do.

ControlProgramsMedian tuitionMedian graduates a year
Public2$10,69817
Private9$37,1959
Ranked master's programs only. Public tuition is the in-state rate.

The private programs aren't priced out of consideration. Academy of Art University, a private school, has the largest program here at about 55 graduates a year, and size is the other 40 points of the score. If a private program offers you an assistantship or a tuition waiver, put that number into the comparison, not the published tuition.

How to Compare a Public and a Private Offer

Start with the price you'd actually pay each year, not the sticker. For a public school, ask whether you'd qualify for the in-state rate, since the out-of-state rate can be much higher. For a private school, ask what the typical aid package looks like for graduate students in this program. Then compare the two on the same basis: tuition after aid, times the number of years the program really takes. The gap between the public and private medians here is $26,497 a year, which is $52,994 over a two-year degree. A strong funding offer from a private school can erase that gap, and a missing one makes it larger.

If you want to see which states have the most programs, the rankings by state page lets you start from where you'd live instead of from a school name.

Choosing

Should You Get a Game Design Master's?

A master's makes the most sense in three situations. You're changing careers and want a structured two years to build a portfolio with a team. You want to teach game design at a college, where an MFA is the usual requirement for studio faculty. Or you want research, in game AI, player behavior or interactive narrative, that a bachelor's didn't cover.

It makes less sense if you already have a game portfolio and a bachelor's in the field. Studios hire on what you've built. Two more years of tuition to add a credential on top of a strong portfolio is a hard trade to justify.

Size Matters More at This Level

The size figure matters more at this level than at the bachelor's level. The ranked programs graduate about 180 people a year combined, and Academy of Art University accounts for about 55 of them. The median ranked program graduates about 9 a year, and 6 of the 11 graduate fewer than 10. In a small program your capstone team may be four people, which is good for learning and thin for networking. A larger cohort gives you more teammates to choose from and a bigger alumni group, though you may get less attention from each instructor.

Questions to Ask Before You Apply

  • What did the last cohort's thesis games or capstone projects look like, and can you play them?
  • What share of students receive funding, and what does an assistantship pay?
  • Where did graduates work in their first year after the degree?
  • How many credits are studio courses, and how many are electives you'd pick yourself?
  • Is the degree accepted for teaching at the colleges where you'd want to apply?

If the answers are vague, treat that as information. The methodology page explains how this site scores each level, and the animation schools ranking covers the art side of the field.

After graduation

What Game Design Master's Graduates Earn

BLS doesn't publish wages by degree level or by industry for these jobs. What it does publish: web and digital interface designers, the occupation BLS counts video game designers in, had a national median of $104,000 in May 2025, and software developers $135,980. The video game designer salary page has the spread and the state figures. If you're weighing graduate school against going straight to work, the video game designer career guide covers how people get hired.

What These Numbers Can't Tell You

Both occupations are wider than games. The projections count all the jobs in each occupation, and all occupations together are projected to grow 3.5%. Neither the wage tables nor the projections separate someone with a master's from someone with a bachelor's, and they don't show who works in a studio. So no figure on this page says a master's raises your pay. The honest reading is that the occupation pays well at the median and widely at the edges: the lowest tenth earns under $53,750 and the highest tenth over $201,550. Where you land in that range depends far more on your portfolio, your location and your specialty than on one more degree.

Software developers have a median $31,980 higher than designers in this data. If the technical programs interest you, that gap is one reason programming-focused master's programs are worth a look. If a bachelor's is still ahead of you, start with the best game design schools instead, and see the salary guides and career guides for other game jobs.

How Long Does a Game Design Master's Take?

Most master's programs in game design take two years full time. An MFA is usually two to three years and is the degree most often required to teach studio courses at a university. Also, one public school charges out-of-state students more than the figure shown. See the cost by program.

Do You Need a Master's to Work in Game Design?

No, you do not need a master's to work in game design. Studios hire on portfolio and shipped work, and BLS reports a $104,000 median for web and digital interface designers (May 2025) without separating degrees. A master's helps most if you are changing careers, want to teach, or want a structured year or two to build a portfolio with a team. Two years of median tuition is about 62% of that median pay. See whether it fits you.
