Heads up BLS counts only about 19,970 salaried animators, and freelancers are not in the wage survey, so the median covers a small slice of the field.
How Much Animators Make
The middle half of special effects artists and animators earned between $75,490 and $139,130 a year. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $58,600, and the top 10% over $177,110. In hourly terms the median is $49.

The occupation is small. BLS counts about 19,970 salaried animators and effects artists in the whole country. That's a figure for employees on a payroll. Freelancers and the self-employed aren't in the wage survey.
PercentilesAnimator Pay by Percentile
A median is the pay in the exact middle: half of salaried animators earn more and half earn less. It hides how wide the range is, so the table below shows five points along it. The top 10% earn 3.0 times what the bottom 10% earn, which is a wide gap for one job title.
| Point in the range | Annual wage | Times the all-jobs median |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest 10% earn under | $58,600 | 1.1 |
| Lowest quarter earns under | $75,490 | 1.5 |
| Median | $102,030 | 2.0 |
| Top quarter earns over | $139,130 | 2.7 |
| Top 10% earn over | $177,110 | 3.5 |
The mean wage, which is the total payroll divided by the number of people, was $112,870, which is $10,840 above the median. When the mean sits well above the median, a group of high earners is pulling the average up. In animation those are usually senior artists, leads and supervisors, plus people in visual effects and film work. You shouldn't expect the mean to describe a first job.
How to Read the Percentiles for Your Own Career
Treat the 10th and 25th percentiles as the pay of people early in the career or working in smaller markets. Treat the median as a solid mid-career salaried job. Treat the 75th and 90th percentiles as senior and lead roles. BLS doesn't publish the link between experience and pay, so this is a reading of the spread and not a federal finding. It matches how most creative teams are built: many junior and mid-level artists, and a few leads who are paid a lot more.
What's countedWhich Workers the Animator Pay Figure Covers
The occupation includes everyone who animates or builds visual effects, for film, TV, advertising and games. O*NET's sample job titles for it are 3D Animator, 3D Artist, Animator, Artist, Digital Artist, Graphic Artist, Motion Graphics Artist, Multimedia Producer. The first tasks it lists are "Design complex graphics and animation, using independent judgment, creativity, and computer equipment" and "Create basic designs, drawings, and illustrations for product labels, cartons, direct mail, or television."
That makes the figure the closest federal number for several game jobs: 3D artist, character and environment artist, game animator, and most technical artists. The federal data doesn't split them out or say whether game studios pay more or less than film and TV. If a game studio makes you an offer, the state table below is the fair comparison.
Starting outStarting Pay for New Animators
BLS doesn't publish pay by experience, so the low end of the range is the best guide to a first salaried job: the 10th percentile was $58,600 and the 25th was $75,490. Those are still well above the $50,980 median for all jobs. The harder part is getting the first salaried role at all, since the occupation is small.
Some animation work is contract or project-based, and contract pay isn't in the federal survey, which counts employees on a payroll. If you take contract work, price it against the hourly median of $49, and remember that a contractor pays for their own equipment, software and benefits out of that rate.
The first job is where your school choice shows up. A program with studio internships and a strong graduating-reel showcase gives you a head start, and the animation schools ranking lists every program with its cost and size so you can ask each one about both.
What the First Year Usually Looks Like
Most new animators and artists start in a junior or associate role, or in an internship or a short contract, and move up as their work is trusted with harder shots and assets. Junior artists spend most of their time on supporting work: cleaning up animation, building simple props, and fixing problems a lead points out. Doing that work cleanly and on time is how you get handed the more visible work.
Because the occupation is small, your first role may not have the title you wanted. A role in QA, production or general art support can be a way into a studio, and software QA analysts and testers had a median of $104,300. It's worth taking if the studio has an internal route to the art team, and not worth taking if it's a dead end. Ask in the interview how many people moved from that role to an art role in the last few years.
Comparing Your First Offer
Put the offer next to the state table below and ask three questions. Is it salaried or hourly? Is it a fixed-length contract or a permanent role? Does it include health coverage? A permanent offer under the state median can still beat a higher contract rate once you count the months between contracts and the cost of your own software and hardware.
3D and game art3D Animator, Game Artist and Technical Artist Salary
A 3D animator is paid as an animator in the federal data, so the $102,030 median applies. The same goes for 3D artists, which O*NET lists by name, and for most game artists.
Technical artists sit between art and programming: shaders, rigging, tools and the pipeline that gets art into the engine. There's no separate federal occupation for them; their work overlaps this one and software development. The technical artist career guide covers the role. Concept artists, whose work is painting and illustration, are counted with fine artists and illustrators, at a much lower median of $55,490; the concept artist salary page has those figures.
3D Artist Salary
3D artist is a job title O*NET lists for this occupation, so the national median of $102,030 is the right starting figure for a 3D artist salary. In games, 3D artists model characters, props and environments, texture them, and prepare them so they run in an engine. The range from $58,600 to $177,110 covers everyone from a junior prop artist to a lead character artist. The 3D artist career guide covers that modeling work and how people get hired, and the game animator guide covers animation itself.
Game Artist Salary
Game artist is a broad title. It can mean a 3D artist, a concept artist, an interface artist, an animator or an environment artist, and each of those can be counted in a different federal occupation. For a game artist salary, work out which of those jobs the posting describes and read the matching figure. The 3D and animation roles map to the $102,030 median here. Illustration-heavy roles map to the lower $55,490 median for fine artists and illustrators.
Technical Artist Salary
A technical artist solves problems between art and code. Because that work overlaps with programming, a technical artist's pay can reasonably be read against both this occupation and software developers, who had a median of $135,980. That is a reading of the two occupations, not a federal figure for technical artists. Studios often hire technical artists from the art side, and learning scripting and shader work is the clearest way to move toward that role.
By stateAnimator Salary by State
Washington has the highest published median, $133,480, then California at $130,540 and Nevada at $97,350. The lowest is Iowa, at $47,530.
More important than the medians is where the jobs are. California employs 7,410 of the country's 19,970 special effects artists and animators, about 37% of them. BLS publishes a median for only 31 of the 50 states and DC, because elsewhere the counts are too small or too uncertain to release. If you want a salaried animation job, expect that it may mean moving.

The gap between the highest and lowest published state medians is $85,950. Pay in a state reflects the local studios, the local cost of living and the mix of film, TV, advertising and game employers. These figures aren't adjusted for living costs, so a higher median in an expensive state may buy less than a lower one elsewhere.
Where the Jobs Are
The five states with the most animator and effects jobs hold about 61% of the national total. The table lists them with the median BLS publishes for each.
| State | Jobs | Share of US jobs | Median wage |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | 7,410 | 37% | $130,540 |
| New York | 1,540 | 8% | $96,770 |
| Florida | 1,530 | 8% | $85,870 |
| Washington | 1,130 | 6% | $133,480 |
| Illinois | 630 | 3% | $81,180 |
If your state isn't in that table, you have two options. You can move to a studio hub, or you can look for remote and hybrid roles. Remote animation work exists, but it's usually offered to people who already have shipped credits. Early in your career, being in the same city as a studio makes it easier to land internships and to get feedback from working artists.
OutlookThe Job Outlook for Animators
BLS projects employment of special effects artists and animators to shrink 0.3% between 2025 and 2035, from 51,900 to 51,800 jobs, while all occupations grow 3.5%. It still expects about 4,200 openings a year, because people retire and change careers. Those openings are the jobs you'd compete for.
That's the honest shape of animation as a career: pay that's good for the people who get the jobs, and not many jobs. It changes how you should choose a school. Keep your degree's cost low, because a first job search may take a while, and spend your time in school building a reel that shows finished, polished work. The best animation schools ranking weighs cost heavily for that reason.
The openings figure is 8.1% of current jobs each year. Openings come from people who retire, move to other work or leave the field, and your competition for them is every new graduate with a reel. Animation and art are also exposed to changes in how studios work, including outsourcing and new tools. The federal projection already includes those trends, and it still projects jobs to shrink 0.3%.
EmployersGame, Film and TV Animation Pay
The animator salary figure covers every kind of employer: game studios, film and TV studios, advertising and effects houses. BLS publishes one number for them together, so this page can't tell you which pays more. What you can compare is the work itself.
- Games. Real-time work in an engine, long projects with a shipping date, and a team that includes programmers and designers. Crunch before a release is a known problem in the industry, so ask about it.
- Film and TV. Pre-rendered work, often organized in short, project-based contracts, with specialized roles such as lighting or compositing.
- Advertising and short-form. Shorter projects and faster turnaround, usually with a smaller team.
Skills move between these. A game animator who understands rigging and timing can move toward film work, and an effects artist who learns an engine can move toward games. Since the number of salaried jobs is small, staying flexible about the kind of employer is one of the most practical ways to get hired.
ComparisonAnimator Pay Next to Other Game Jobs
At $102,030, the animator median is close to the $104,000 median for web and digital interface designers, the occupation game designers are counted in. Illustrators and fine artists earn much less, at $55,490. Animators who add rigging, scripting or engine skills are moving toward the technical artist role. The game design salary hub compares every game job side by side.
| Game job | Median | Projected change |
|---|---|---|
| Animators and 3D artists | $102,030 | -0.3% |
| Game developers | $135,980 | +10.2% |
| Game designers | $104,000 | +6% |
| Game testers | $104,300 | +5.7% |
| Concept artists | $55,490 | -2.9% |
The table maps each game job onto the BLS occupation that counts it, because BLS has no game-specific occupations. Read it as a guide to the neighbors of animation, not as pay for the exact job title. Compare the medians before you decide whether to add scripting or tools skills to your art skills.
Getting paid moreWhat Raises an Animator's Salary
- Your reel. Studios hire animators on a short reel of their best work. Quality beats quantity.
- A specialty. Character animation, rigging, effects and real-time animation are separate skills, and depth in one is easier to sell than a little of each.
- Real-time engine skills. Game animation runs in an engine with performance limits. Knowing how your work behaves there makes you useful to game teams.
- Location. The state table shows how far the median moves from state to state.
Building a Reel That Gets Read
A reel is usually a minute or two long, with your best work first. A reviewer may stop after a few seconds, so open with your strongest shot. Show finished work with clear timing and weight, and label what you did on any shot you made as part of a team. Remove anything you wouldn't want to be judged on.
Negotiating
Once you have an offer, you have more room than you think to ask about it, and the state table gives you something to point to. Ask about the salary range for the role, the review cycle and the title. A better title early in your career can matter more than a small difference in pay, because it affects the next offer.
CostIs an Animation Degree Worth the Cost
The median animator salary is 2.0 times the all-jobs median, so the pay can justify a degree. But the number of salaried jobs is small and BLS projects jobs to shrink 0.3%, so a degree only pays off if you finish with a reel and not much debt. Compare programs by cost and by what graduates show in their reels. The animation schools ranking and the best game design schools ranking list programs by cost, and the portfolio guide covers what to put in a reel.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Do Animators Make?
BLS reported a national median of $102,030 for special effects artists and animators in May 2025. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $58,600 and the top 10% over $177,110. That occupation covers film, TV and other media as well as games, so a game studio offer can differ. The mean is higher than the median because a few high earners pull it up. See the pay by percentile.
How Much Does a 3D Animator Make?
3D animator is one of the job titles O*NET lists for special effects artists and animators, so the federal figure is the same: a median of $102,030 in BLS May 2025, with the middle half earning $75,490 to $139,130. That range covers the whole occupation, not only game studios, and BLS doesn't publish pay by experience. See 3D animator, game artist and technical artist pay.
How Much Do Game Artists and Technical Artists Make?
BLS has no game artist or technical artist occupation. Animators, 3D artists and many technical artists are counted with special effects artists and animators, at a median of $102,030 in BLS May 2025. Concept artists who paint and illustrate are counted with fine artists, at $55,490. Each figure covers a whole occupation, mostly outside games. Ask a studio which role the job fits before comparing it with these figures. See who the animator figure covers.
Where Do Animators Make the Most Money?
Washington has the highest published median for the occupation, $133,480, then California at $130,540. California has by far the most jobs, about 37% of the national total. State medians aren't adjusted for living costs, and they cover film and TV as well as games, so the best-paying state is not always the best offer. Employment is concentrated, so where the jobs are matters as much as where the median is high. See the state table.
Is Animation a Growing Career?
Not by BLS's projection. It expects special effects artist and animator jobs to shrink 0.3% from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% growth for all jobs, with about 4,200 openings a year from people leaving the occupation. Those numbers cover film, TV and games together, and demand varies by studio and specialty. Treat it as a read on the whole occupation and not on any one studio or specialty. See the full job outlook.
Do Animators Need a Degree?
Not by any rule, and studios hire animators on their reel. O*NET doesn't publish an education breakdown for this occupation. A bachelor's in animation or game art is the usual way people build a reel with feedback and deadlines, but the reel is what gets read. If you skip school, you need another way to get critique and finish pieces. See whether an animation degree is worth the cost.
What Is the Starting Salary for an Animator?
BLS doesn't publish pay by experience. For special effects artists and animators, the lowest-paid 10% earned under $58,600 and the lowest quarter under $75,490 in BLS May 2025, which is the closest guide to a first job. The median of $102,030 reflects people with years of experience, and the figures cover film and TV as well as games. See pay for new graduates.
