Is a Short Game Design Credential Right for You?

Use this ranking if you want a short, cheap credential. Certificates take from a few months to two years, and 63 of the 69 colleges here are public. The median net price is $8,700 a year. They suit career changers, people adding game skills to another degree, and anyone testing the field before a degree.

Methodology

How We Score These Programs

Every certificate is scored on three federal figures: the college's eight-year completion rate, its average net price and the certificate's own graduates a year. Completion is 40 of the 100 points, net price 40 and size 20. The figures come from IPEDS, so they're reported the same way by every college.

IPEDS doesn't publish a completion rate or a price for a certificate on its own, so the first two figures describe the whole college. Treat them as a measure of the college, and check the certificate's own length and cost on its page.

Certificate programs in game design, game programming or simulation, open to new students

A program makes this list when it is a certificate in game design or interactive media, game programming or simulation and virtual environments at a college in the 50 states or DC, has had graduates in the last three years, and the school publishes its completion rate and net price. It must also be open to new students: closed and phasing-out programs are left off. A college with more than one such program appears once, with its higher-scoring program. A program missing one of these figures is left off rather than estimated.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Madison, WI · Public · Game design program

72.4
  • Certificate, under one year
  • Public

The University of Wisconsin-Madison certificate is interdisciplinary, jointly offered by Curriculum and Instruction, Art and Computer Sciences. Students work alone and in small teams to build a portfolio that spans board games, video games and physical spaces, and the focus is designing, testing and understanding gameplay that is fun and impactful. Making games here covers puzzles, toys, role-playing and sports, not only screen-based titles.

To declare, a student first completes two courses: Game Design I in the Curriculum and Instruction department, plus a second chosen from options that include ART 107, Introduction to Digital Forms. Advising on sequencing and declaring runs through a Student Services office. It suits current Madison undergraduates who want making-focused work beside a major. About 44 students complete it each year. School-wide net price is $14,216 for aided first-years, and 89% of entering students across the university complete within eight years.

Fayetteville Technical Community College

Fayetteville, NC · Public · Game design program

72.4
  • Certificate, under one year

Undergraduate and Postbaccalaureate Certificates

The federal data holds 82 game design, game programming and simulation certificates at 73 colleges. 76 are undergraduate certificates, open to anyone with a high school diploma, and 6 are postbaccalaureate or post-master's certificates at 6 colleges, which assume you already hold a degree. Undergraduate certificates are the large majority, and they produce about 96% of the 838 certificates awarded a year, averaged over three years.

Which Level Fits You

The shortest certificates, those under a year, make up 59% of the programs. They suit someone who wants one skill, such as an engine or a modeling tool, without committing to a degree. Longer undergraduate certificates give more room for a finished portfolio piece. A postbaccalaureate certificate fits someone with a bachelor's in another field who wants to add game skills, or a designer or programmer who wants to move into games.

The median certificate graduates about 3.5 students a year, so most are very small programs. A small cohort can mean close attention from instructors, and it can also mean the program runs only some years. Check that the certificate is open for the term you want before you plan around it. Every level has at least one ranked program.

Where

Where Game Design Certificates Are Offered

Certificates appear in 26 states. The 5 states with the most programs hold 55% of the 82 between them, and 11 states have a single program. If you can't relocate, your own state may decide the choice for you, so check it before comparing scores.

Public, Nonprofit and For-Profit

74 of the 82 programs, or 90%, are at public colleges, and 25 of the top 25 are public. Community and technical colleges dominate because they run short job-focused programs at a low price. The median net price across the 69 ranked colleges is $8,700 a year, and the median completion rate is 33%. Both are school-wide, so they describe the college, not the certificate, and a certificate that takes a few months won't cost a year of net price.

Where a group has no ranked program the table shows n/a, because we only score programs whose college reports both figures. Private colleges can charge much more for the same short credential, so ask for the total cost of the certificate itself and whether the credits count toward a later degree. Ask the financial aid office what help applies to a short program before you enroll.

Choosing

Certificate or Degree

A certificate is a faster and cheaper start, and a degree is the usual way into a studio design or programming job. Across the colleges ranked on the associate degree page, the median net price is $8,000 and the median completion rate is 31%. For bachelor's programs the figures are $26,200 and 59%. The certificate colleges sit at $8,700 and 33%. All three are school-wide numbers for the college, and they're not what you'd pay for any one credential.

Which one makes sense depends on what you already have. If you hold a degree in another field, a postbaccalaureate certificate can add game skills in less time than a second degree. If you're new to college, a certificate can be a low-cost test of whether you like the work, and some colleges let certificate credits count toward an associate degree, which you should confirm in writing. If your goal is a studio job as a designer or programmer, plan on a degree and use a certificate as a step or a supplement.

Make the Certificate Count

Studios hire on what you can show, so pick the program that leaves you with finished work. Ask to see projects from last year's students, which engine or tools the courses use, and whether instructors work or have worked in the industry. Build one or two complete pieces rather than many small exercises. The game design portfolio guide covers what to show.

The certificate vs. degree guide goes through the trade-off in more detail. When you're ready to compare degrees, the associate degree ranking and the best game design schools ranking are the next steps up.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Best Game Design Certificate Program?

By this site's score, Wayne Community College has the best game design certificate program for 2027, followed by Hinds Community College and West Georgia Technical College. 69 colleges with a certificate in game design, game programming or simulation are ranked on completion (40 points), net price (40) and the certificate's own graduates a year (20). The first two describe the whole college and not the certificate, so check the certificate's own length and cost on its page. See the top 25.

Is a Game Design Certificate Worth It?

A game design certificate can be worth it as a cheap way to learn an engine and build portfolio pieces, or to add game skills to another degree. Studios hire on portfolios, and a certificate alone rarely substitutes for the four years of projects a bachelor's gives you. The median net price at the colleges ranked here is $8,700 a year, which is the college's average and not the certificate's own price. The game design certificate guide covers when each makes sense.

How Long Does a Game Design Certificate Take?

It depends on the level. Of the 82 certificate programs with graduates reported to IPEDS from 2022 to 2024 under the three game codes, 48 take under a year and 22 take one to two years. The rest are longer undergraduate certificates or postbaccalaureate ones for people who already have a degree. Check the certificate's own page for its credit count. See the certificate levels.

Why Do Completion Rates Look Low?

Completion rates look low because they are the college's rate for all entering students, full-time and part-time, and not the certificate's own. The median across the 69 ranked colleges is 33%. Most of these colleges are community and technical colleges, where many students attend part-time, so a rate that looks low is not necessarily a poor certificate. Treat it as a measure of the college and compare it with the next school's. See how we rank.

How Much Does a Game Design Certificate Cost?

The median net price at the 69 colleges ranked here is $8,700 a year, but that is the college's average for aided first-year students and not the price of the certificate. IPEDS does not publish a price for a certificate on its own. The certificate's own page has the real number. 63 of the 69 colleges are public, so in-state students usually pay their state's lower rate. See every college's net price.

Should I Get a Certificate, an Associate Degree or a Bachelor's?

A certificate is the fastest and cheapest start, and a degree gives the portfolio depth studios want. The median net price is $8,700 at the colleges ranked for certificates, $8,000 for associate programs and $26,200 for bachelor's programs. Median completion is 33%, 31% and 59% respectively. A certificate also leaves out the general education courses a transfer would need. Compare certificate and degree routes.

Are Public Colleges the Best Place to Earn a Game Design Certificate?

Public colleges are the main place to earn one. 74 of the 82 certificate programs here, about 90%, are at public colleges, and 25 of the top 25 are public. Private colleges also offer certificates and some are postbaccalaureate programs for people who already hold a degree. Compare the control, price and completion columns together. See where certificates are offered.
