Game Programmer Salary for 2027

The game programmer salary BLS reports comes from software developers, occupation 15-1252, because BLS counts game programmers there and has no separate game category. That occupation's median was $135,980 a year in the May 2025 wage survey. Here's what each point in the range means for a programmer, an entry-level estimate, how specialties and skills move pay, and how the figure compares with computer programmers.

How Much Game Programmers Make

There is no game programmer line in the federal wage survey. BLS counts game programmers as software developers (15-1252), and O*NET files programming work in games under the same occupation. Every figure on this page is that occupation's, which means it also covers business software, apps and infrastructure.

Software developers earned a national median of $135,980, or $65.38 an hour. Half earned between $105,210 and $171,980. The chart shows the full spread, from the lowest-paid tenth to the highest.

For a game programmer salary, read the chart as the market for your skills rather than a studio rate. A programmer who can ship a game can usually do the same work for a non-game employer, and studios hire from the same pool, so this is the range a studio offer is competing with.

Percentiles

Game Programmer Salary by Percentile

The table puts each point in the range next to the kind of programming role that tends to sit there. BLS doesn't publish pay by experience or level, so the right-hand column is our reading of the spread, not a federal finding.

Point in the rangeAnnualHourlyWho usually sits here
10th percentile$82,460$39.64Where many first programming jobs and smaller markets sit
25th percentile$105,210$50.58A junior role a year or two in, or a mid-level role in a lower-cost state
Median$135,980$65.38An experienced programmer who owns features on their own
75th percentile$171,980$82.68Senior programmers and specialists in high-cost metros
90th percentile$214,670$103.21Leads, principal engineers and the best-paying markets
Software developers, BLS OEWS May 2025; hourly figures from the OEWS all-data file. All-jobs median: $50,980.

The top tenth earns 2.6 times what the bottom tenth earns, so where you land matters more than the median. Moving from the median to the 75th percentile is worth $36,000 a year, and that step is usually about owning a harder system rather than adding years.

Starting out

Entry-Level Game Programmer Salary, Estimated From Percentiles

This is an estimate read from the percentiles, not a federal entry-level figure. BLS doesn't publish pay by experience. The lower end of the range is the closest guide: the 10th percentile was $82,460 ($39.64 an hour) and the 25th was $105,210 ($50.58 an hour). The median reflects people with years of experience, so expect a first programming job to sit toward the lower end, and use the state figures below to adjust for where the studio is.

QA is a common way in for people who aren't hired as programmers straight away. Software QA analysts and testers had a median of $104,300, and a tester who writes test tools and scripts is in a good position to move across. See the game tester salary page for that route.

What Gets a Junior Programmer Offer

  • A finished game or tool with readable source in a public repository.
  • One engine learned well, plus the language it uses.
  • Team experience, from a game jam or a class project with shared version control.
  • A short write-up of one hard bug and how you fixed it.
Specialties

Pay by Programming Specialty

BLS counts every kind of game programming in one occupation and publishes no pay by specialty, so no figure here is broken out that way. What we can describe is the work, how hard each role is to hire for, and where it sits in a team.

SpecialtyThe workHiring
GameplayCharacters, abilities, enemies, cameras and rulesThe usual first programming job
EngineMemory, loading, threading and performanceFewer roles, usually for people with systems experience and strong C++
GraphicsRendering, lighting and shadersFewer roles, and they ask for linear algebra and GPU knowledge
Network and onlineMultiplayer sync, servers, matchmaking and live servicesOverlaps with backend web work, so people move in from outside games
ToolsEditors, importers and build pipelines for the teamLooks like application development and transfers easily

Roles that few people can do tend to sit higher in the range, but that's a reading of supply and demand, not a federal number. Tools and online roles are the easiest to move between games and other software work, which gives you more bargaining room when you negotiate. The game programmer career guide covers what each specialty asks you to learn first.

Skills

Languages and Skills That Raise Programmer Pay

No federal source links a language or skill to a pay figure, so treat this as what employers ask for, not a price list. O*NET marks software as "in demand" when it appears often in job postings. For video game designers, the game-specific occupation O*NET has, C# carries that flag. For software developers it includes Atlassian JIRA, Jenkins CI, Git and TypeScript. C++ is the language most large commercial engines are written in, and it's the one engine and graphics roles ask for.

Three things move a programmer up the range more than another language does:

  • Depth in performance. Profiling, memory and frame-time work are what separate engine and graphics programmers from scripting.
  • The math under 3D. Linear algebra for graphics, physics and cameras is a common gate for the better-paid specialties.
  • Shipped code. A released game or a tool other people use is evidence that you finish, which is what a lead is paying for.

Version control, task tracking and build automation (Git, Jira and continuous integration) don't raise pay on their own, but every studio expects them, and a candidate without them is harder to hire.

A related occupation

Software Developers vs. Computer Programmers

BLS also publishes computer programmers (15-1251). It is a related occupation, not the one game programmers are counted in. In BLS's occupation definitions, software developers design and build software, while computer programmers write and test code to designs drawn up by others. BLS's example titles for computer programmers are mostly IT and business roles, such as applications programmer, computer language coder, computer programmer, IT programmer.

Projected change, 2025 to 2035+10.2%-7.3%
BLS OEWS May 2025 and Employment Projections 2025-35.

The software developer median is $35,590 higher, and the outlook points the other way: BLS projects software developer jobs to grow and computer programmer jobs to shrink. For a game programmer, the lesson is the job title on your résumé matters less than the work. Designing and owning a system is what the higher-paid occupation describes, and it's what moves a game programmer from writing to spec toward the median and above.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does a Game Programmer Make?

BLS counts game programmers as software developers, whose national median was $135,980 a year in May 2025, or $65.38 an hour. The middle half earned $105,210 to $171,980. There is no separate game category, so the figure covers every industry, including business software and apps, and a studio offer can sit above or below it depending on the city, the studio and your specialty. See every percentile.

What Is the Entry-Level Salary for a Game Programmer?

BLS doesn't publish pay by experience, so an entry-level figure has to be estimated from the percentiles. For software developers the 10th percentile was $82,460 and the 25th was $105,210, which is a reasonable range for a first programming job. The figures cover every employer of software developers, so treat them as a range to check an offer against, and expect a first job to sit toward the lower end of it. See the estimate.

Do Gameplay, Engine and Graphics Programmers Earn Different Salaries?

Federal data can't say, because every specialty is counted in the same software developer occupation and BLS doesn't publish pay by specialty. What the data does show is a wide range: the top 10% earned 2.6 times what the bottom 10% earned. Engine and graphics roles ask for more math and C++, and fewer people can do them, so it's reasonable to expect them higher in that range, but that is a reading, not a federal figure. See the specialties.

Which Programming Languages Raise a Game Programmer’s Pay?

No federal source ties a language to a pay figure. O*NET flags C# as an in-demand skill for video game designers, meaning it appears often in job postings, and C++ is the language most large commercial engines are written in. Depth matters more than the count of languages: engine, graphics and performance work is where a programmer moves up the range. See the skills.

Are Game Programmers Counted as Computer Programmers?

No. O*NET and BLS count game programmers as software developers, 15-1252. Computer programmers, 15-1251, are a separate and smaller occupation whose median was $100,390 in May 2025, and BLS projects its jobs to decline 7.3% from 2025 to 2035. This page shows it only as a related occupation, for roles that write code to someone else's design. Compare the two.
